Douglas County Judge Theresa Slade sentenced Shawn Sheldon Chapman, 48, to three decades in prison this week following a lengthy felony criminal case that began in 2018.
On October 5, 2018, an alert Douglas County sheriff’s deputy who was on routine patrol ran a vehicle tag. Chapman, the vehicle’s owner, showed an active felony warrant in the system.
A felony stop was conducted and a K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.
The following was seized from Chapman’s car:
6.9 pounds of Methamphetamine
3 Ecstasy pills
13 grams of psilocybin mushrooms
17.5 grams of Cocaine
Deputies found methamphetamine packaged in six, 1-pound bags, plus tubs containing additional methamphetamine. Other narcotics were individually packaged and a scale along with multiple plastic bags were located inside the vehicle. Chapman also had a bag of 50 yellow pills later identified as Alprazolam, a controlled substance, and Cocaine on his person.
A thorough search of Chapman’s vehicle also led to the seizure of a rifle, silencer and multiple burglary tools.
Chapman pleaded guilty to the following charges:
Controlled Substance Possession with Intent to Distribute (Drug Class 1 Felony)
Controlled Substance Possession (Drug Class 2 Felony)
Possession of a Dangerous Weapon (Class 5 Felony)
Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender (Class 6 Felony)
During sentencing, prosecutors noted that Chapman had eighteen criminal cases with a total of 24 felony convictions.
“Mr. Chapman is the very definition of a lifetime criminal,” Deputy District Attorney Sherri Giger said. “When he is not in custody, he is committing new crimes. He has been given multiple opportunities for probation and failed.”
Chapman was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in the Department of Corrections following a lengthy hearing.
“It’s time this defendant truly be held accountable for his actions and I believe this sentence takes a menace to society off our streets,” District Attorney John Kellner said. “For almost 30 years, this defendant victimized our communities and racked up more than a dozen felony cases. The justice system gave him numerous chances to turn his life around, yet he chose to continue a life of crime. This 30-year prison sentence is justified.”
